Summary

The Merchant Navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet. Its job is to deals with transporting cargo and occasionally, passengers, by sea. Its fleet is therefore composed of passenger vessels, cargo liners, tankers, carriers, as well as other special types of vehicles. It is full of adventure and long voyages to exotic places. Above all this, the excellent pay and promising promotional opportunities make the career lucrative and exciting in spite of all the hard work life and long absence from family and home.

For a student to apply for degree in Merchant Navy, following criterion must be met :

The minimum eligibility for courses in nautical science and Marine engineering is 10+2 or any other equivalent examination that includes physics, chemistry and mathematics.

He should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no color blindness.

Candidates who want to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete a Bachelors degree in Nautical Science or Marine engineering before they can gain admission to the field.

Entrance criteria:

Entrance exam or direct admission on merit Basis.
IMU CET- after 12th(PCM) with minimum 50% in English Other entrance exams are TMISAT, JEE MAIN, WBJEE CUSAT CAT.

Salaries and Perks

In merchant navy salary ranges from 12lakhs to 8 lakhs per month also, pay structure depends on experience. Junior Engineers - 30000 per month and 2nd engineers/ chief engineers-1.5 lakhs per month, 3rd officers are 50000 per month and Captain pay is 2 lakhs

Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Adv. Maritime studies and research, Mumbai

The college was established by the Ministry of Transport, Government of India, in 1948. The Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research is a premier post-sea Maritime Education and Training Institute offering a comprehensive range of courses for Merchant Navy Officers. LBS College is about 1.5 k.m. from the ‘Reay Road’ Railway station & 2 k.m from 'Sewri' Railway station on the Harbour line of Central Railway. It can be reached by BEST bus Nos. 60, 168 and also by the College bus at routine timings. The institute is housed in a modern seven-storeyed building overlooking the picturesque Mumbai harbour with Butcher & Elephanta islands and hills to the East on a six acre site on the harbour front at Hay Bunder Road, Sewri, Mumbai. Two multi-storeyed hostel blocks to accommodate 400 students and seven-storeyed residential block with 12 faculty quarters are situated in the campus.

TS Chanakya, Mumbai

T. S. Chanakya became operational on 1st August, 1993 and teaches the cadets the new order but also makes them upholders of the old ones. The navigation and communication simulators provide a realistic on hand training on meeting various situations effectively. All cadets are adept in handling computers before they pass out. Library is stocked with large number of books and periodicals on wide ranging subject. A number of open play grounds zoom with activity after the class hours. Besides the three years degree course, T. S. Chanakya imparts training for one year Diploma course.

National Maritime Acadamy Chennai

The National Maritime Academy conducts training programmes for both port and marine personnel. This is conducted under two divisions - Marine and Port.The Marine division conducts pre-sea and post-sea training program for merchant navy personnel, working both on deck and engineering side.Under the Port division, courses are offered for officials of major ports, Maritime Boards, non-major ports and organizations connected with transport trade. Facilities inlude hostel, library,swimming pool,etc.
