Summary

Biotechnology engineering is the study, research, and development of bio-organism, microorganism and cell functions in living beings. The course combines engineering with other subjects like chemistry, genetics, biochemistry, and microbiology. It involves the technology and biological science for development in the field of medical, agriculture, security and bio-research.This field is an emerging discipline of engineering which is a combination of engineering and biology for research & development.It applies to the field of animal husbandry, agriculture, energy production and conservation, pollution control, disease research, eco-conservation, and research and development of medicines, vaccines, fertilizers, and insecticides.

    Areas of Research

  • Medicine

    The medicinal branch involves the discovery and production of pharmaceutical drugs, pharmacogenomics, and genetic testing or screening etc.

  • Agriculture

    The agricultural research includes Genetically modified crops which mean that the DNA of a particular crop is modified using genetic engineering techniques whose basic aim is to introduce a new trait to the plant which does not occur in that particular species.

  • Industrial

    Industrial biotechnology as the name suggests is the application of biotechnology for industrial purposes, which includes industrial fermentation, using of cells or components of cells like enzymes in order to generate industrially useful products which can be used in sectors like chemicals, food and feed, detergents, paper, and pulp, textiles, and biofuels

  • Environmental

    Biotechnologies can have positive as well as negative effects on the environment. Cleaning up environmental wastes is an example of an application of environmental biotechnology; whereas loss of biodiversity or loss of containment of a harmful microbe is examples of environmental implications of biotechnology.

For admission in a bachelor’s degree,
  • Candidate should at least have 60% or above in 10+2 higher secondary school certificate examination with science subjects such as biology, physics, and chemistry.
  • For IITs, it is mandatory to qualify biotechnology entrance Exam.
  • The duration of the course is 4 years.
