If you are really fascinated with the exploration and discovery of mineral resources, this can be the right career for you. Mining engineering is a branch of engineering that involves the application of science and technology to the extraction of minerals from the earth. A mining engineer ensures the safe and sufficient development of mines and other surfaces and underground operations. They are involved at all stages of a project. Before a new site is developed, they assess its viability and assist with the planning the mine's structure. Due to the nature of its industry, mining engineering is an international career and the opportunities are overseas. So if you love traveling and seeing places around the world, this is a great opportunity for you.
Areas of Research
Surface and subsurface characterization
For a student to apply for undergraduate degree in Mining Engineering, following criterion must be met :
For admission to bachelor's degree, the candidate must have passed the higher secondary school examination with science stream. For IITs, it is mandatory to qualify the JEE mains and advanced. For other engineering colleges in different states, corresponding states have their respective qualifying examinations. The duration of the course is 4 years although IITs and NITs offer five-year integrated Master's degree.
The master's degree aspirants are needed to be an undergraduate with B.Tech or B.E. For premier institutes, you need to qualify GATE and for other international universities and Ivy League colleges you need to appear for GRE and IELTS/TOEFL.
Students studying mining engineering normally get placed in core mining sector. Some are even employed by explosive and mining machinery domain. Mining engineers are in demand in Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Kuwait, and Qatar. Some of the big public sector companies hiring in India are Coal India Ltd. Manganese Ore India Ltd, SAIL, Uranium Corporation of India Ltd whereas some private sector companies are Vedanta, Tata Steel, Adani Mining, Jindal Steel etc.
The importance of mining engineering has been rapidly increasing in the fields:
Ore Reserve Analysis
Drilling and Blasting
Design of Engineering Structures
Environmental aspects mining
Mine Health and Safety
Salaries and Perks
The average pay for a Mining Engineer is Rs 6,00,000 to 7,00,000 per year. A skill in Project Management is associated with high pay for this job.
